Our home appliances have become so integrated into our lives that the inevitable break down can become a big disruption to our daily routine. A large broken appliance, such as a range, refrigerator, or washing machine, can quickly put a dent in our quality of life.

Deciding whether to repair or replace an appliance, particularly when trying to discover which option will save money in the long run can be challenging. The most important factor to consider is the age of the appliance compared to its replacement cost. The general rule of thumb is that, if a repair will cost more than half the price of a new appliance and the closer it is to 10 years old, it may be time to consider a new one.

Should You Replace or Repair Broken Appliances?

However, before you decide to spend your hard earned money, here are a few tips to help you make an educated decision on the best option for you:

  • Washing Machine – Most repairs are economical, but when it comes to electronic components it may be wise to get an estimate and weigh it against purchasing a new one.
  • Range – Again, most repairs are economical, but the electronic components can be expensive. Even so the high-end models it may be worth repairing, depending on the age and manufacturer.
  • Refrigerator – Because your refrigerator is running nonstop, seven days a week there are more opportunities for things to go wrong. High end and built-in models are more expensive to replace generally, but are no more expensive to repair and are more likely worth repairing.
  • Dishwasher – In most cases, dishwashers can be easily repaired. The average life expectancy of a typical dishwasher is 9 to 10 years, and 15 to 20 years on high-end units. Use the same rule of thumb of age to replacement cost to determine if it is better to have it repaired.
